The EQ is something that can defenitley help a mix. When you have sounds in the mix that may be too heavy you can lighten them up. You'll want to take off way more than add and you never want to over eq, that can make things sound plastic, the key is to blend everything together. Vocals need to be pronounced in front of your mix. I find eq one of the most important things i use to blend my sounds together. It's always your call what needs to be eq'd but for those sounds that just seem to not sound smooth in the mix a little eq can help out most of the time.
